Would Vaping Prohibition Work?

The short answer is no. Just like the prohibition of alcohol and cannabis, vapers will find a way, and that isn’t necessarily a good thing. Unregulated, black-market vapes have been sprinkled throughout the news in recent years with stories of adding chemicals that normal vape juices and disposables (like we sell) don’t contain. At Smoke and Vape Tokz, we’re always watching for the latest news on vaping and what the FDA is doing, which seems to point to banning flavored vaping products altogether in the near future. Will it actually happen? It’s hard to say, but some states, including California, have already put an all-out ban on flavored vaping products, which seems contradictory to public health as many vapers will turn back to cigarette smoking, an obviously poor choice. In this post, we’ll look at how past prohibition didn’t work at all and why it won’t work in the future.

Prohibition refers to the legal banning of a substance’s manufacture, sale, and transportation. The most well-known example of the ban in the United States was the National Prohibition Act, also known as the Volstead Act, which was in effect from 1920 to 1933. Whether prohibition works is complex and has been debated for decades.

Prohibition can effectively reduce alcohol consumption and related harms such as drunk driving, liver disease, and crime. Studies have shown that during the prohibition period in the United States, alcohol consumption decreased significantly, and alcohol-related health and social problems declined.

However, prohibition also has several negative consequences. It can lead to the creation of black markets, illegal production and distribution of alcohol, and organized crime. Prohibition can also increase the potency of the alcohol produced illegally, leading to more severe health consequences for those who consume it.

In addition, prohibition can be difficult to enforce, leading to the violation of individual rights and civil liberties. The prohibition of alcohol in the United States, for example, was widely flouted, and the law needed to be revised to enforce it. It also led to the violation of individual rights and freedoms, as many people continued to consume alcohol despite the ban.

In conclusion, while prohibition was somewhat effective in reducing alcohol consumption and related harms, it also has negative consequences, including the creation of black markets and the violation of individual rights. Whether prohibition works or not depends on a variety of factors, including the specific context, the level of enforcement, and the attitudes and behaviors of the people affected by the ban.

This same scenario is almost certain to repeat itself if the FDA and big tobacco have their way with flavored vaping products. Why would big tobacco be on board with the FDA? It’s simple, they are losing money year after year to smokers who switch to less harmful nicotine products like vaping, and they want their customers (and money) back. While we can’t accurately predict if and when the FDA will ban flavored vaping products nationwide, we can say that it will be an uphill battle for them. At Smoke and Vape Tokz, we’ll continue to be advocates for vapers in the Kansas City area and beyond while continuing to carry the top-rated vape products at discount prices like we always have.
