Vaping, or the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), began to gain popularity in the United States in the mid-2000s. The first e-cigarette was developed in China in 2003, and by 2007, it had made its way to the US market.

In the early years, e-cigarettes were marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes and a smoking cessation aid. However, there were concerns about the safety and efficacy of these products, as they had not been adequately tested or regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In 2009, the FDA attempted to regulate e-cigarettes as drug delivery devices, but the courts ruled that they should be regulated as tobacco products. This meant e-cigarettes were subject to fewer regulations than pharmaceuticals and medical devices but more regulations than traditional cigarettes.

As e-cigarettes grew in popularity, particularly among young people, concerns were raised about their potential health risks and the marketing tactics used by manufacturers to target youth. In 2016, the FDA finalized regulations that required e-cigarette manufacturers to submit their products for review and approval by the agency.

In 2019, a rash of lung injuries and deaths associated with vaping brought renewed scrutiny to the industry. The outbreak primarily affected young people and was ultimately linked to using black-market THC products rather than legal nicotine-based e-cigarettes. However, it led to a renewed push for stricter regulation of e-cigarettes and vaping products.

Today, e-cigarettes and vaping products are heavily regulated in the US. The minimum age for purchasing these products is 21 in most states, and many states and cities have implemented additional restrictions on their sale and use. The FDA has also continued monitoring and investigating the safety of e-cigarettes and vaping products, particularly their impact on youth and vulnerable populations.

While we aren’t sure where the future of vaping is going, we do know that it has come under increasing attack by not only the FDA but by big tobacco companies like R.J. Reynolds, which has obviously seen a drop in sales and the smoking rates in globally due in part to the availability of vapes and vaping devices.
