Why Is The FDA So Focused On Vaping and Not Tobacco?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed regulating flavored vaping products, but why aren’t cigarettes, the most dangerous product in the United States, a focus for the FDA?

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and it’s responsible for over 480,000 deaths each year. Each year, tobacco products are responsible for over 1.1 million deaths worldwide. However, there has been very little attention paid to tobacco since the passing of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act in 2009. The act prohibits the FDA from regulating tobacco or nicotine at this time. Instead, it forces the agency to study tobacco use and create plans to reduce exposure to these products among the population. This act became effective on Aug. 8, 2011. Yet, even with restrictions on its ability to regulate tobacco, the FDA continues to push forward with its fight against e-cigarette use.

Specifically, the agency has focused its attention on flavored e-cigarettes like JUULs and has threatened to ban them if manufacturers do not curb the use of flavors such as strawberry, mango, mint, bubble gum, and cotton candy. Perhaps the most significant concern among some lawmakers is that youth who use e-cigarettes are at an increased risk of using traditional tobacco products.

It’s important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to combating tobacco use. The FDA’s latest action doesn’t address the many concerns surrounding cigarette smoking — smoking is still permitted in public and even bars across the country. And that’s troubling because cigarette smoke is toxic and harmful whether a person is young or old, healthy or not.

Tobacco products are the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide. Further restricting access to safer alternatives like e-cigarettes is not the answer, especially not when cigarettes remain legal in many public spaces throughout the country and continue to claim the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. There are many more effective ways to help reduce tobacco use in this country, and vaping is definitely one of them. It’s time for the FDA to focus on more effective ways to reduce tobacco use, like increasing access to smoking cessation programs and raising the price of cigarettes to help ease the burden of smokers who may not be able to quit on their own.

At Vape Tokz, we’ve seen countless smokers come through our doors and successfully kick the habit with the help of vaping.
