It’s hard to tell what will transpire in the coming months with the FDA and big tobacco companies seemingly working in sync to stomp out flavored vaping as we know it, but the good news is that there has been plenty of pushback. At Smoke and Vape Tokz at 103rd and State Line Road, we keep our eyes on the latest vaping news, and we’re happy to see so many vape companies taking the FDA to task on their overreaching regulatory initiatives.

As with any sweeping change, a closer look at the details usually provides a good degree of insight into what the endgame truly is. It should not be breaking news that the FDA has had its sights set on flavored vaping products for quite some time now but now, with their latest push to have vape companies prove how their products are “a benefit to public health,” lawsuits are being filed almost daily to stop them. It should be no surprise that big tobacco companies need smaller vape companies to go the way of the dodo bird to capitalize and gain back the profits they lost to people that have kicked smoking.
Here’s an interesting point of view that the FDA doesn’t want you to consider: why don’t cigarette and tobacco companies have to prove how their products benefit public health because common sense would say otherwise. What’s worse is that most if not all of the vaping devices that have been approved to market by the FDA are manufactured by subsidiaries of big tobacco companies (Vuse, NJoy, JUUL, etc.).
As someone who visits numerous smoke and vape shops in the Kansas City area each month, these aren’t the brands that most vapers want or even like. So why are these brands being approved while more popular flavored vaping products are being vilified and under the threat of being banned? It’s simple, money and profit. With the rise of vaping as an alternative to smoking, big tobacco companies have lost millions and maybe billions of dollars, and as the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them. Or, in big tobacco’s case, use lobbyists and quack doctors to spread misinformation, creating a false narrative to sway people to either a) their sub-par vaping products or b) go back to smoking. Either way, it’s a lose-lose situation for vapers.
We don’t know exactly what the future of vaping will look like, but if the FDA has its way, it will likely taste pretty bland (tobacco flavor) from mediocre vaping devices.
